How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery

Car Mechanic Going Over Checklist

Learning how to disconnect and install a car battery is easy enough for most Monterey Bay drivers. If you’re interested in attempting this maintenance for yourself, read this guide from the service center at the Lexus Monterey Peninsula.

Preparing for Disconnecting and Installing a Car Battery

Before you disconnect your old battery and install your new car battery, you’ll want to make sure of a few prior conditions:

  • Wear gloves, clothing you won’t mind getting dirty, and safety goggles to protect yourself from battery acid.
  • Be mindful of battery acid. Don’t spill it on yourself or your paint.
  • Take note of the correct battery terminals and wires to avoid making a mistake.
  • Never let a metal object touch both terminals of the battery.
  • Have the vehicle turned off, in park, and with the emergency brake set.

You’ll also need to have certain tools on hand before proceeding. Your owner’s manual will contain specifics on the location of your car battery and have tool suggestions, but generally Pebble Beach drivers attempting this maintenance will need:

  • Battery pliers or a battery wrench (a combination wrench will work in a pinch)
  • A socket and ratchet
  • A battery terminal puller
  • A wire brush
  • Baking soda or Battery-cleaning solution
  • Anti-corrosion solution

Once you’re prepared, it’s time to start!

Steps for How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery

Most Salinas drivers can disconnect and install a new battery in around two hours, so give yourself at least that amount of time. Then, just follow these steps:

  1. First, turn off your vehicle, put it in park, and set the emergency brake. Be sure your vehicle is entirely cool, waiting at least half an hour after it was last running.
  2. Once your engine has cooled, pop the hood of your vehicle. You’ll find the battery inside. Your owner’s manual will contain the exact location for your model.
  3. Identify the negative (black) and positive (red) battery cables and terminals.
  4. Detach the negative (black) battery cable from the battery. To do so, start by loosening the nut with battery pliers or a battery wrench. If you don’t have those, a combination wrench will work.
  5. Remove the cable by twisting it and pulling up on the end of the cable with your hand. It may not come off easily. In that case, you can use a battery terminal puller to prevent damage to your battery or cables. Prying the terminal off with a tool like a screwdriver could cause damage.
  6. Repeat the past three steps with the positive (red) battery cable and terminal.
  7. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down clamp. A combination wrench may also work.
  8. Now it’s time to remove the battery. Take care not to spill any battery acid, and note that car batteries are heavy. If the battery has a handle, use that to lift it out. If not, grab it from the bottom with both hands.
  9. Before replacing the battery, you’ll want to clean the cable connectors and battery tray. There may be corrosion left on either one, which will look like a white or greenish powder. Use a wire brush and either a mix of baking soda and water or a battery cleaning solution to clean the battery tray and cable connectors.
  10. Dry both thoroughly before replacing the battery. There mustn’t be any water on either before they come in contact with the new battery.
  11. Lift the new battery, and place it in the battery hold-down tray. Secure the battery with the hold-down clamp.
  12. Prepare the terminal ends by spraying them with an anti-corrosion solution.
  13. Attach and tighten the positive battery cable (Red).
  14. Attach and tighten the negative battery cable (Black).
  15. Check one last time that all the cable connections and hold downs are properly tightened. Try to move the battery back and forth. If it or the battery cable terminals move at all, your car may not start due to a weak electrical connection.
